US and UK trained clinical psychologist Dr. Maria Micha says that this is a perfect time for couples to “learn how to be more loving under difficult and strenuous circumstances.” She cited challenges that married couples experience — such as sicknesses, miscarriages, financial issues, and job loss — which often catch them by surprise and probably don’t know how to deal with as a single unit at first. The current situation is a crisis they’re already experiencing together, giving them the opportunity to really get to know how they and their partner react under such situations will prepare them for any further crises they may encounter.
“It’s important for couples to stay united … and offer and accept consolation from one another,” she shared. However, she also advised couples in any relationship to “not put the strain” of their happiness on their partner. “It’s not their job to make sure you’re always in high spirits”, she said, but rather, they’re there to help celebrate happy moments and give support during difficult times.
Aside from this, Maria recommended that couples find other ways they can connect with one another. Quality time together is very important, whether it’s done through video calls (for couples living apart) or in-person (for couples living together). She also said couples — dating, engaged, or married — should use this time in self-isolation to share their dreams of how they want their marriage to be. From concrete plans, such as buying a house together, to musings of travels abroad, these will help strengthen the connection between couples, especially those who are on the brink of a life-changing step in their relationship. This is merely a bump in the road to their happily ever after.

TESTIMONIAL
Maria’s warm, caring and compassionate approach to my therapy immediately put me at ease and I felt very comfortable with her. She has helped me enormously during the time I have been seeing her and I will continue to do so. She is a truly wonderful therapist and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her.
Maria helped me gain clarity about many difficult issues. With her guidance, expertise and techniques, my life has turned around – especially my relationships with loved ones. Within a few sessions, Maria helped me feel confident and calm. Now I am able to accomplish the things I once thought were out of my reach.
My husband and I were having problems with our marriage and while I was initially hesitant to even consider therapy my husband convinced me to give it a try. I have to say that Maria has helped us tremendously and guided us in overcoming the issues that were present in our relationship and our marriage is back on track.
